BLIP is an inter-disciplinary platform for prototyping new models of "spaces for autonomy." Projects and interventions happening all over India are coordinated through this web-site and are documented in the blogs and photo galleries.

Each year invited artists, architects and others respond to themes posted by BLIP and receive some support for their projects. The theme for BLIP 08 is "alternative cultural spaces." [more information here]

Some ideas for posts and "levels of participation"

This weekend everyone (Kajal, Manmeet, Nisha and me) did their first log-ins and navigated around BLIP and had a chance to get used to some things here. This is a small post which puts some ideas for blog posts and comments out there and describes the levels of participation (posting, commenting etc.) that'd be good to have @ BLIP.

  • Ideas for blog posts: Project updates, essays, process-based writings and sketches, reviews of other art projects, interviews and conversations... (more to be added).
  • Ideas for comments: suggestions, ideas, arguments, critiques, additions... (more?)

Weekly levels of participation:

  • Once a week:
    • Make a blog post about your project. Regular posts will help others as well as your co-artists to understand your artistic process and give feedback or help you overcome technical limitations or respond in other ways.
    • Post images of your work/process.
  • Twice a week: Check the BLIP website for new or updated posts or forum topics, you can see them on the home-page. Comment on posts and forum topics you find interesting or initiate new topics you want to seed discussion on.

Introduction: BLIP 08

Theme: Peri-urban Investigation: Mapping Alternative Spaces For Culture in Urban and Small-town India Cultural activities in Indian cities and towns are usually staged in clearly designated spaces. Conversely, seeking out living spaces which are in the midst of people, do not have specific designations and are more open, welcoming and approachable would effectively create a map of existing and new alternative spaces for culture.

  1. This would allow more people to find their place in existing and experimental cultural discourse and get involved in it if they choose.
  2. Give un-conventional private and public spaces and locations cultural associations, leaving them open for future interpretation.
  3. It should also seed a dialogue about the marginal and fringe position which culture seems to have assumed in contemporary society and suggest ways to change this.

All the artists part of BLIP 08 will respond to this theme in their own way.
Kajal, Manmeet, Nisha and Prayas are a part of BLIP 08. Kajal is working on a network of bird-houses across Baroda, Manmeet is installing games at bus-stops in Noida, Nisha is working with unused apartment houses in Mumbai and Prayas is making a mobile bamboo bus in Bangalore.
